Benefits of Coffee

It’s no secret that caffeine is the college students’ weapon against late nights and early mornings.  This sweet brown liquid can give you just the jolt you need to get through the task at hand.  But coffee isn’t just a way to stay awake.  There are many benefits that coffee drinkers reap, if they are careful to not consume more than the recommended 2-3 cups of coffee per day (we’re not counting if you want to pour that 4th).

For years coffee has gotten a bad rap from the medical community, but it now appears that the scientific data collected on this popular bean show it to be a major element in disease prevention.  Coffee is a great source of antioxidants, a natural substance found in food that prevents cellular damage in the body.  Studies have found that the naturally occurring antioxidants that come in coffee offer a variety of health benefits to those that consume it.

Coffee seems to prevent inflammation from forming in the body, therefore providing some pain relief as well as protecting the body from inflammatory processes, such as those that lead to cardiovascular disease.  Coffee also has some antibacterial properties which has been shown to reduce cavities and other periodontal disease.

So, go ahead and feel good about your coffee consumption.  It is a healthy part of a balanced diet, and may be contributing to your longevity.  Also, the social benefits of sharing a cup of coffee and a conversation can’t be discounted.  There is a sense of ritual and comfort in sharing over a steaming mug, as evidenced by coffee’s popularity over the centuries.

It's good for you!
